WOKHA, DECEMBER 14 (MExN): The Nagaland Power Department commissioned a 5 MVA transformer at Wokha on December 14. A report from the DIPR informed that this would increase the power transformer capacity by double. 

Executive Engineer, Electrical Division Wokha, Er Chonrothung Ezung said over the past 15 years the power demand/consumption has staggeringly increased, yet on the other side the power transformer capacity has not been upgraded or augmented.

He informed that the existing 5 MVA power transformer in Wokha is fully overloaded and thereby on the verge of a breakdown at any moment. The existing 33/11 K 5MVA power transformer was installed at Power House Wokha in 2005. In view of this, the Wokha power division had apprised the situation to the Chief Engineer (D&R) Nagaland to allot additional 5 MVA power transformer. The department allotted the same on November 9. 

Ezung expressed optimism that Wokha will have adequate power supply for at least ten to twenty years. 

He meanwhile thanked the State Government and the Department of Power on behalf of the citizens of Wokha district for timely intervention which will greatly benefit the well being of the district. Ezung also expressed his gratitude to his subordinate staff for completing the installation process within three week to present it as a gift to the citizens of Wokha district.

The transformer was commissioned in the presence of the Chairman, Lotha Hoho, Mhondamo Ovung and Rev Abemo Jungio who dedicated the installation.

Chairman Lotha Hoho, Mhondamo Ovung who graced the occasion as special invitee thanked the State Government as well as the Department of Power on behalf of the Lotha Hoho and Lotha community. He also thanked Er Chonronthung Ezung for his efforts to address the irregular power supply in the district. 

A press release from the Lotha Hoho said that the town with the lone 5 MVA transformer has been reeling under frequent power interruptions. 

“Many Power Department Chief Engineers and Divisional Engineers have come and gone and they have been requested and knew the problem. But they have passed their tenure without attending to the need of the people of Wokha town. Only this time, Chief Engineer Moatemsu Aier and Divisional Engineer Chonrothug Ezung have taken the initiative to fulfill the need of the Wokha town people. Hence the power consumers, of wokha town, are grateful to the department and in particular the two engineers,” it stated. 

The Lotha Hoho meanwhile asked other departments to follow suit by doing the needful for the people of the town in terms of health facilities, water supply, roads, education etc. “All these improvement works can be done, only with public co operation and transparent administration, with sincere commitment to their people by the elected leaders,” it added.
